CYCLE ROUTES
De Alde Feanen National Park has some beautiful cycle routes. There are routes where you must take a little ferry at several points, or you can visit a lookout tower or one of several birdwatching huts.
And from Earnewâld, you can also visit the “Wâlden”. This is a beautiful and secluded wooded bocage (mixture of forest and pasture) to the north east of Earnewâld. To the south west, you will find open and unspoilt old Frisian meadows. There are so many possibilities!
TO HELP YOU ON YOUR WAY, HERE ARE TWO BEAUTIFUL CYCLE ROUTES.
THE FERRY ROUTE (45 KM.)
This cycle route passes through De Alde Feanen National Park across De Burd island towards Grou and then onward via Akkrum, Pean and De Veenhoop back to Earnewâld. Along the way you must take a ferry four times. In the cycle route app you can find information about fares and sailing times. The cycle route passes through part of De Alde Feanen National Park and across beautiful, peaceful and open Frisian meadows. THE NORTHERN FOREST ROUTE (30 KM.)
The ancient cultivated landscape of the “Noardlike Fryske Wâlden” (Northern Frisian Forests) is beautiful and has been designated a National Landscape. It is characterised by canals lined with alder trees, hedgerows and “pingos” (hills formed by glacial activity). Nowhere else in Europe will you find such an unusually beautiful bocage landscape. Farmers once planted rows of trees around the meadows as livestock fences. This cycle route passes through the villages of Garyp, De Tike, Eastermar and Sumar.
